BARE LEGS NO MORE !

As we are nearing the end of summer (sigh! tear!) and approaching the fall, for most of us our bare legged days are nearing an end as well.   Out comes the hosiery.

If we do wear hosiery during the hotter months, we are more likely to wear an ultra sheer stocking. While in the cold, winter months we are more likely to wear tights or a thick opaque hosiery.   And there is a range of options in between.

The mid 1960s marked the height of hosiery. The mini-skirt was very popular at this time. Since traditional stocking tops could be seen under such a short skirt, pantyhose were invented.

Today, panty-hose, stockings and tights make a fashion statement.   Many hosiery manufacturers are working with cutting-edge designers to create a variety of designs and styles.   Hosiery is not only fashionable when wearing skirts or dresses but can hide our perceived flaws such as blemishes, bruises, scars, hair and varicose veins.   They can also prevent that chafing we get between our legs in the summer.

Read on for a quick lesson on hosiery:

Ultra Sheer

Ultra sheer tights are very light, transparent and often have a high sheen.   They are ideal for achieving a bare legged look.   They smooth out blemishes and keep your legs cool in the summer.   Many ultra sheer pantyhose will also have sheer toes which make them ideal to wear with sandals.   Stockings that have a sandal toe means that the weave is slightly thicker on the toe compared to the rest of the leg.   (This helps avoid the peekaboo bare toe!)

Sheer

Sheer hosiery is also a must-have for summer. It is slightly thicker than an ultra sheer so is more durable for everyday wear.   For a natural look choose a matt finish.   If you want to stand out a bit more go for a shine finish.

Semi Opaque

Semi-Opaque hosiery is stronger and longer lasting than sheer. It will give your legs more coverage, but your skin will remain quite visible. They provide a classic look and are better suited for professional attire.

Opaque

Opaque hosiery provides even more coverage and your skin is much less visible than when wearing semi-opaque tights.  They have a slimming effect and provide a more dramatic look. They are great for winter and in the spring go well with shorts, mini-skirts and ankle boots.

Thick Opaque

Thick opaque hosiery is especially welcomed during the winter to keep your legs warm and they are durable.  Because they are so thick you will only see the outline of your leg.

Mega Thick

Mega thick opaque tights are the next best thing to leggings and wooly tights for thickness.  They will keep you even warmer than thick opaque hosiery in the dead of winter.  And, f you want a solid colour on your leg, they give your legs complete coverage.

So as we move into the fall and winter months, our sheer hosiery will also move from semi-opaque to opaque and thick opaque.  Some of you may not bother to wear skirts or dresses at all during the winter and decide to wear trousers instead.  You can always opt to wear hosiery under your pants to keep you extra warm!
